Santa Lucia Highlands

Santa Lucia Highlands is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) located south of the Monterey Bay in California, on the terraces of the Santa Lucia mountain range.  Spanish missionaries planted the first vines in the 1790s, but it was during the 1970s that a new wave of winegrowers saw the area’s potential for cool-climate grapes like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.  It has a maritime climate, with heavy winds and fog coming from the bay to help moderate the abundant sunshine and heat, resulting in a long growing season that allows the grapes to develop complex aromatic components.  Santa Lucia Highlands gained AVA status in 1992 and has since emerged as a top location for high quality Pinot Noir, known for its silky tannins, rich red fruit flavors, and delicate earthiness.
