Lugana

Lugana is a small Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) located on the southern part of Lake Garda, between Veneto and Lombardy, in northern Italy. Their wines are made almost exclusively with the white grape Turbiana, a local grape related to Trebbiano di Soave.  For many years, this grape was believed to be similar to Verdicchio, until recent studies showed that it is a different variety.  Lugana DOC creates fresh wines with very expressive aromas of peach, mandarin, and minerality.  The vineyards thrive with the fresh breeze and mild climate provided by Lake Garda, while the unique clay soils add complex aromatics and structure.  While most of the bottlings are crisp and floral young wines, Lugana DOC can be labeled Superiore (with ageing in stainless steel or light oak), Riserva (with extended oak ageing), Vendemmia Tardiva (sweet), or even Spumante.
