Nemea PDO (Protected Designation of Origin), the largest red wine appellation in Greece, is located in the northeastern part of the Peloponnese peninsula. It was established in 1971 to designate red wines made entirely of the indigenous grape Agiorgitiko. The styles vary considerably from young and fruity to oak aged versions capable of extended ageing in the bottle. A small quantity of fortified and sweet wines is also produced. Agiorgitiko has complex aromas of cherries, red plum and baking spices, with ripe tannins and bright acidity. Fun fact: the region is mentioned in Greek mythology as the place where Hercules defeated the Nemean lion, hence the wines are known as “Hercules Blood”!
