Gavi is a small town located in Piemonte in northwest Italy that is the center of production for the wine that carries its name.  The area was delimitated in 1974 and awarded DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) status in 1998 to include vineyards in the surrounding villages. The wine must be made of 100% Cortese, a white grape that has been planted in the region since the 17th century, and can be sparkling or still.  Most of the wines are dry and still with piercing acidity, delicate citrus aromas and elegant minerality. It is labeled as Gavi if the grapes come from nearby villages outside town, or Gavidi Gavi if the vineyards are in the town of Gavi.
