Monterrei

The Monterrei Designation of Origin is in the northwest of Spain, within the region of Galicia on the northern border of Portugal. Its wine history dates to more than two thousand years ago with the arrival of the Romans, who took advantage of the presence of the Támega River that crosses the area from north to south, flowing into the Duero River.  Since 1183, some restrictions on the production and marketing of wine were already established, but it was not until 1994 that it was certified as a designation of origin (DO).  It has a temperate Mediterranean climate where winters are cold and summers have hot days with cool nights, perfect for ripening the grapes while maintaining sharp acidity. They produce both white and red wines, mostly for consumption while young, although sometimes we can find some barrel-aged, identified on the label with the words Crianza, Reserva or Gran Reserva.  The white varieties that predominate are Godello, Treixadura, Dona Branca and Albariño, while the red varieties Mencía, Merenzao and Sousón stand out.

Currently, Monterrei has 29 wineries officially registered under the DO, including Terras do Cigarrón, who produce a fresh Godello full of citrus, mineral and saline aromas.
