When talking about aromatic white grape varieties Chenin Blanc is one of the first to come to mind. This versatile grape originated in the cool Anjou region of the Loire Valley in France and has traveled the world adapting to warmer climates like South Africa (where it is called Steen), and North America. Also known as Pineau de la Loire, its flavor profile ranges from apple, pear, peach, and ginger to honey and chamomile, depending on the ripeness of the grapes.
Its naturally high acidity and medium body allow Chenin to shine in a variety of styles ranging from sparkling to dry, off dry, and sweet. It is the main white grape used in the Vouvray region of the Loire Valley, where estates like Chateau Monfort offer their off dry style with aromas of granny smith apple and pear with traces of minerality and balanced acidity. In the warmer areas of the Napa Valley of California, Pine Ridge blends Chenin Blanc with Viognier, another French grape variety, in a dry style of wine with a bouquet full of apricot, ginger and white flowers.
