In the past couple of years, you may have noticed the rapid increase of the term “Red Blend” on wine labels from all over the world. The truth is, the art of blending has been a pillar of our industry for centuries, allowing us to enjoy some of the most classic reds from Bordeaux, the Rhone Valley, Chianti, Valpolicella, Rioja, and Port amongst others. Modern and very popular examples of red blends have emerged from California, Washington State, Australia, Argentina, and more…
But not all blends are made the same. Every grape varietal provides a significant component to the balance of the wine. Take, for example, a Bordeaux style blend from California. Cabernet Sauvignon imparts structure and dark fruit aromas combined with a long finish while Merlot adds silky tannins and ripe red fruit flavors. Cabernet Franc brings bright acidity with a touch of herbal notes and Petite Verdot finishes with bold tannins and intensity of color. If you are looking for a blend that expresses more structure, look for wines with high content of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Malbec.
If you prefer blends that deliver bold fruit flavors, look for blends based on Merlot or Shiraz. With their burst of flavor and their easy drinking personality, these modern blends are here to stay.
