A fiasco, or flask, is a traditional Italian wine bottle that has a round body covered by a straw basket. It is believed that its origin dates back to the 14th century in Tuscany, when glass was expensive and difficult to find, and creating a round bottle was easier in terms of workmanship and less costly. The straw covering protected the thin glass from breakage and the wine from sun damage, as well as providing a flat surface for the bottom of the bottle. The fiasco became a symbol of the region of Chianti, and it still is to this day!
Castello Banfi preserves this tradition with their Bell’agio Chianti, a red wine made of Sangiovese, Canaiolo Nero, Trebbiano and Malvasia, and packaged in the traditional fiasco bottle.
