Côtes du Rhône AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) is one of France’s largest wine appellations, stretching across 172 communes in southeastern France along the Rhône River. Viticulture here dates back to 125 BC, when the Romans planted vineyards and organized wine production. The appellation was officially recognized in 1937, placing it among the earliest AOCs in France. The region features a diverse mix of soils—clay, stones, and rounded pebbles (galets)—which contribute to balance and complexity in the wines. The climate is warm Mediterranean, marked by hot, dry summers and the powerful Mistral winds, which blow from the north up to 150 days a year at speeds near 60 mph. These winds help keep vineyards healthy and preserve freshness in the grapes. Côtes du Rhône allows 21 approved grape varieties dominated by Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre for red and rosé wines, and Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc for white wines. Classic Côtes du Rhône wines show ripe red fruit, subtle earthy tones, and hints of lavender and herbs. The style is generally approachable, fruity, and easy drinking, designed to be enjoyed young while offering excellent value and versatility.
