In an everchanging wine world, Marselan is the red grape we did not know we needed. Bred in France in 1961 as a cross of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, this red grape is regarded nowadays for its ability to resist high heat and drought, making it a perfect ally in the fight against climate change. With this purpose, it was recently approved for use in red Bordeaux wines, and it is one of the most successful varieties in Chinese viticulture.
Grown mostly in Languedoc, France, and China, Marselan produces wines of a deep purple hue with aromas of red berries and plums with a hint of earthiness and medium tannic content. Bodegas Garzon in Punta del Este, Uruguay, has been very successful with this variety for several vintages. They produce their Marselan Reserva form estate owned vineyards close to the Atlantic Ocean, where the grape develops concentrated aromas of eucalyptus, red fruits, and a touch of earthy minerality.
Marselan
is best paired with full flavored dishes like roasted rack of lamb or powerful
aged hard cheeses. Now it’s the time to
start discovering this grape; we will likely be seeing much more of it in the
following years.
