Monovarietal wines are made using only one grape variety, allowing us to enjoy the unique character of that grape. They are usually made in regions where a specific grape has adapted successfully to the climate and soil composition, like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Burgundy. This type of wine showcases the purity of the grape, its aromas, flavors, and overall components. They also express the influence of a specific region in the development of the grape and the wine it will eventually produce. Most white wines are made in this style, since red grapes are more suitable for blending.
Each of the wine producing countries has their own set of laws regarding the use of a single varietal on a label. For example, in the United States, to produce a varietal label the wine must be a minimum of 75% of the same grape.
