Petit Verdot is known as one of the blending grapes traditionally used in the famous red wines of Bordeaux, France, where it is believed to have been cultivated by the Romans almost a thousand years ago. However, this bold grape has also found a home in California, Australia, and South America, where it benefits from the warmer climate to achieve maximum ripeness. Its name translates as “small green”, in reference to the small size of the berries it produces and to the fact that it ripens late during the growing season, with some grapes even being green at the time of harvest in cooler regions. It is one of the most structured red grapes, adding intense color, full tannins, and aromas of black fruit and flowers to blends around the world.
Bodegas Garzon produces a 100% Petit Verdot from a single vineyard in Punta del Este, Uruguay. This example is bursting with aromas and flavors of dark plum, blackberries and violets with a hint of spiced toasted oak coming from the 18 months it spends ageing in barrels.
The concentrated structure of Petit Verdot needs to be accompanied by equally intense dishes. Enjoy a bottle with richly flavored meats like grilled lamb chops or braised beef short ribs. Cheers!
