The Muscat family of grapes encompasses more than 200 varieties grown around the world to produce wine, table grapes, and raisins. It is said that this ancient variety was cultivated by the Egyptians, while other believe it is native to Greece. Their skin color varies from pale yellow to pink or dark red, being the most popular varieties the white skinned Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains, Muscat of Alexandria, and Muscat Ottonel.
This versatile grape is produced in a variety of styles as: lightly sparkling like Robert Mondavi “Moscato d’Oro, sparkling Asti Spumanti, sweet wines like Spanish Moscatel, still wine like Sicilian Stemmari, and fortified French “vin doux naturel” like Paul Jaboulet Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. They share a similar floral flavor profile and intense aromas of honeysuckle, orange blossom, mandarin and tropical fruit.
