Viognier

The Rhone Valley in France is well known for its Syrah-based red wines, but it is Viognier that reigns amongst the white varieties of the region.  This full body grape is famous for its intense aromatics and versatility, creating wines that range from bone dry to sweet, presenting flavors of tangerine, apricots, cream, and white flowers. It was almost to the point of extinction during the 1980’s but since made a full recovery, traveling from France to vineyards all over the world, with plantings thriving in United States, Australia, South Africa and Chile.

The region of Condrieu in Northern Rhone Valley is recognized as the benchmark for monovarietal ViognierMaison Tardieu-Laurent has made a reputation for producing a Condrieu that benefits from oak aging to develop aromas of honeysuckle and ripe apricots wrapped around a subtle creamy mouthfeel. In the Willamette Valley of Oregon, Illahe Vineyards practices biodynamic viticulture combined with traditional techniques to produce a Viognier with flavors of white flowers, honey, and bright acidity.
