Verdejo

During the 11th century, migrants from North Africa reached the region of Rueda in Spain, bringing with them their culture, gastronomy and vines.  The white grape Verdejo adapted beautifully to the harsh cold winters and hot summers of the region, producing wines with touches of oxidation, similar to those of the Jerez region in the south.  In the 1980’s, winemakers started vinifying a different style of Verdejo, with aromas reminiscing of honeydew melon, fresh herbs, and bright, piercing acidity.  With its fresh fruit character and easy to drink personality, it is quickly becoming one of the favorite Spanish white wines.

Verdejo has found in Rueda a perfect home, along with other secondary white varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Viura, Chardonnay, and Palomino.  For a taste of a classic, try Marques de Caceres, which is made with estate grown grapes and benefits from some aging on its lees to develop fresh bread aromas and creamy texture. Bodegas Buil Gine produces a modern style of Verdejo, full of aromas of key lime, white grapefruit, and grassy undertones.

Grab some fish tacos or a refreshing ceviche and pop open a bottle of Verdejo or take one to the beach as a perfect partner.  Cheers!
