Brachetto

When talking about unique grapes that produce adventurous wines, Brachetto should be on top of the list. This red grape is planted mostly in the areas of Asti, Roero and Aqui Terme in the northwestern region of Piemonte, Italy, where it can be produced as a still, slightly sparkling (frizzante), or fully sparkling wine (spumante). However, most versions are slightly sweet, frizzante and low alcohol with a beautiful ruby red color and intense aromas of rose petals, cola and ripe red berries. It is known as the wine for romantics, with urban legends telling stories of Cleopatra falling in love with Julius Caesar over a sip of Brachetto. Talk about unique!

The region of Acqui in Piemonte carries the Italy’s top-quality designation of Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita to produce wines made 100% with Brachetto, known as Braquetto d’Acqui.  It is here that world renowned winery Castello Banfi sources its “Rosa Regale”, a sweet, low alcohol, sparkling version of this grape bursting with aromas of red flowers and tart cherries.  Try a bottle with dark chocolate cake, a refreshing fruit tart or a mixed berry pie.

Part of the allure of wine tasting is being able to travel the world through unique grape varieties. Dare to try Brachetto and let the adventure begin!
