Zinfandel

The red grape Zinfandel has long carried the recognition of being “America’s grape”.  This bold, flavorful variety finds its origins in Croatia, where it is known as Crljenak Kaštelanski, and was brought to New York during the 1820’s by the owner of a grape vine nursery, then it made its way to California during the Gold Rush.   Story has it that Roman soldiers were the ones that carried this vine to the Italian region of Puglia, where it is known as Primitivo.

When grown in the California sunshine, Zinfandel produces wines that are intense in color with medium tannins, low acid, and concentrated flavors of blackberry, tobacco and cinnamon.  It also produces the famous “white Zinfandel”, a low alcohol, sweet rose wine.  In the warm Napa Valley we can find Titus Vineyards and their old vine family vineyards.  Titus Zinfandel is bursting with intense aromas of wild berries, cola and pomegranate. In the cooler areas of Sonoma we can find Seghesio Vineyards, where they create Zinfandel from grapes harvested from vines that are almost 70 years old.  The region of Lodi is regarded as one of the best areas to plant Zinfandel in California and it is here where we can find Gnarly Head Old Vines and their wines full of jammy red fruit flavors.

Bring a bottle of Zinfandel to your next BBQ as it pairs beautifully with hamburgers, smoked meats and pork ribs.  Sit back, relax, and enjoy the burst of flavors this grape has to offer.
