Maldonado is a wine growing region located in southeast Uruguay, next to the Atlantic Ocean.  Vines have been planted in this area since the 1890’s but it was in the past 20 years where the industry flourished with local and international investments, in part due to the unique coastal location and varied soil composition rich in “balasto”.  This soil, one of the oldest in the world, is made primarily of crushed stone, gravel and ash, has excellent drainage to protect the vines during extreme rainfall, as well as containing a wide variety of minerals to feed the plants.   Red varieties, like Tannat, Cabernet Franc, and Marselan thrive in this maritime climate, while Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay are the preferred white grapes.

Bodegas Garzón was founded in Maldonado in 1999, with the vision of creating world renowned wines while protecting the essence of the environment and region.  In 2018, they were named “Best Winery in the New World” by Wine Enthusiast Magazine, a first for a winery in South America!
